Doctor, independent scholar, poet and essayist

Biography

Iain Bamforth grew up in Glasgow where he studied at the city’s medical school. He has since combined medical practice and writing, being awarded a Scottish Arts Council writers’ bursary in the year he graduated. His medical training has included periods in places as disparate as the American Hospital of Paris and Broken Hill Base Hospital in outback Australia. After settling in Strasbourg in 1995, he worked as a solo family doctor before becoming a freelance health and development consultant in several countries, mostly in South-East Asia.

His writing interests include poetry and essays on a variety of topics from the medicine and the arts, language and philosophy, European culture and the wider history of ideas. Articles and commentaries have appeared over the years in Times Literary Supplement, New York Times Book Review, The Threepenny Review, Parnassus, Quadrant and PN Review.

“ Iain Bamforth is a moralist, but a moralist as Aesop or La Fontaine can be, where body and mind reacquaint themselves, merge even, in stories of the ethical animal. ”

- Richard Price, Times Literary Supplement

“ The wandering mind will find bountiful rewards in Iain Bamforth's Zest: Essays on the Art of Living... It is a remarkable, sometimes provocative, tour de force as the author escorts us from the Garden of Eden to Provence, from Apulia to Papua. For a series of incidental essays that have been described as "digressive and droll," Zest actually possesses a remarkable coherence. It is the perfect volume to dip into if you want respite from the social whirl of the upcoming festive season. “

“ This collection is a joy to read, full of so much nuance, and persuasive language, a permanent wistfulness that never strays into the twee and the constant sense of travel, of movement and growth. “

- Matt Macdonald, Scottish Review of Books
